A Post-Summer Cacao Ritual

The end of the summer brings a natural shift in rhythm. The days begin to change, children go back to school, work picks up, diaries start filling again and the freedom and flexibility of summer gradually gives way to more structured days.

In this month’s blog, 5 Tips to Manage the Post-Summer Holiday Blues, one of the most helpful things we can do at this time of year is resist the urge to rush straight back into everything.

September can be a transition, a moment to pause, look back at the summer you’ve had and consciously decide what you want to carry with you into the months ahead.

This cacao ritual gives you the space to do exactly that. Allow yourself around 20–30 minutes somewhere you can be undisturbed, with a prepared cup of Ritual Cacao, a journal and pen, and a candle if you have one.

1. Create Your Space

Put your phone somewhere out of reach and give yourself permission to step away from everything that needs your attention. As you prepare your cacao, begin to slow everything down and bring your attention to what you are doing.

Notice the cacao as you portion it, watch it melt into the water and breathe in the aroma as you stir. You don’t need to think about what comes next or what still needs to be done.

For the next few minutes, simply allow yourself to be in the present moment.

2. Connect With Your Cacao

Find somewhere comfortable to sit and hold your cup in both hands. Close your eyes and take a slow breath in through your nose, followed by a long breath out, and repeat this three times.

Notice how you are feeling without trying to change anything. You may be looking forward to getting back into a rhythm, feeling overwhelmed by everything starting again, sad that summer is coming to an end, or perhaps ready for something new.

There is no right way to feel about this transition, so allow whatever is there to simply be there and take your first few sips of cacao slowly.

3. Look Back Before You Move Forward

Before thinking about September and everything ahead, take a moment to look back at the summer you have just experienced. Not only about the holidays, trips or bigger moments, but the ordinary ones too: longer evenings, time outside, conversations, meals shared with people you love, mornings when you didn’t need to rush, moments when you laughed, something unexpected, something you learnt about yourself, or something that simply felt good.

Open your journal and complete these three sentences:

This summer, I loved...

This summer reminded me...

One thing I am grateful for is...

Don’t overthink your answers; write whatever comes naturally. Then take another sip of cacao and feel gratitude and appreciation for all the things this summer season gave you, and everything you experienced.

4. Decide What You Want to Carry Forward

One of the things I explored in this month’s blog is that what we miss after a holiday is often not the destination itself, but the way we were living while we were there. Perhaps you spent more time outside, were less attached to your phone, walked more, rested more, laughed more or simply had more space in your days.

Ask yourself:

What did summer give me that I want to keep?

What small part of summer could I bring into my everyday life?

Is there anything summer showed me that I would like to do differently?

Try not to turn this into another list of things you “should” do.

Choose one thing that genuinely feels nourishing and realistic, whether that is protecting one morning a week from plans, continuing an evening walk, spending more time outdoors, seeing friends more regularly or simply giving yourself ten quiet minutes with your cacao before the day begins.

5. Set Your Intention for September

Take a few more sips of cacao and ask yourself how you want to move through the weeks ahead.

Rather than focusing on what you need to achieve or how productive you need to be, think about how you want this next season of your life to feel. Perhaps you want more spaciousness, more connection, more time outside, a slower start to your mornings, or simply less rushing.

Write down one simple intention for September that feels meaningful and achievable.

When you have finished your cacao, sit quietly for another minute or two and notice how you feel compared with when you began.

You don’t have to leave everything you loved about summer behind. Sometimes the most meaningful way to move into a new season is to consciously carry a part of the old one with you.
