The Origins Ritual

This ritual is an invitation to pause and reconnect with where cacao truly comes from.

It connects you to the trees, the land, the climate, the farmers and the long line of cultures that have worked with this sacred plant for thousands of years.

As cacao becomes increasingly commodified, replicated and replaced, this ritual offers a moment to remember that real cacao does not begin in a factory or laboratory, but in a living ecosystem.

It begins as a flower growing directly from the trunk of a cacao tree, before becoming a pod, a seed and eventually the cacao we drink.

You Will Need

25–42g of ceremonial-grade cacao
250ml of water or plant milk
Your favourite cacao cup
A quiet space where you will not be disturbed

Prepare Your Cacao

As you prepare your cacao, slow down and become aware of each part of the process.

Notice the colour, aroma and texture of the cacao as it melts into the water, and reflect on the journey it has taken to reach you.

Imagine the cacao trees growing beneath the canopy, the insects pollinating the flowers, the fruit ripening on the trees, the farmers harvesting the ripe pods, and the hands fermenting, drying and preparing the beans.

Recognise that every cup contains the work of many people, alongside the generosity of the Earth.

Create Your Ritual

Place both hands around your cup and take three slow, deep breaths.

With each exhale, allow your body to soften and your attention to return to the present moment. Feel the warmth of the cup in your hands and bring your full awareness to the cacao in front of you.

Acknowledge the journey it has taken to reach you: from seed to tree, flower to pod, harvest to fermentation, and from the hands of the farmer into your own.

Drink With Awareness

Take your first sip slowly. Rather than focusing only on the flavour, notice how the cacao feels in your body.

As you begin to drink, feel the cacao nourishing your body, opening your heart and gently awakening your energy. Reflect on the fact that this ancient plant has been valued for thousands of years, not only as food, but as a source of nourishment, connection, ritual and wellbeing.

As you sit in quiet contemplation, ask yourself:

  • How can I honour more the food I consume?

  • How can my choices support the future of real cacao?

  • What relationship do I want to have with the food and plants I consume?

If you have been feeling stressed, anxious or uncertain, ask the cacao what it would like you to notice. Rather than searching for an answer, listen quietly to your body, your feelings and any thoughts, memories or insights that begin to arise.

Write down any inspiration that may arise from these reflections.

Offer Your Gratitude

When you have finished drinking, you may feel called to offer a simple prayer of gratitude:

I honour the cacao tree, the land that nourished it, the farmers who cultivated it and the generations who have protected its knowledge. May I receive this cacao with gratitude, respect and awareness. May my choices help to protect its future.

You may also make a simple commitment, such as consuming more consciously, learning more about where your cacao comes from, reducing your consumption of low-quality chocolate and supporting businesses that prioritise ethical sourcing and farmer relationships.
