What Are GMOs, Really?

GMOs (genetically modified organisms)  are plants or animals whose DNA has been altered in a lab to accentuate certain traits, like pest resistance, longer shelf life, or higher yields. While some argue GMOs can feed more people more efficiently, the truth is much more complicated.

In the world of cacao, genetically modified strains are increasingly being developed to resist disease and boost productivity. On the surface, this might sound great. But there’s a serious catch, these GMO cacao strains often come at the cost of biodiversity, soil health, farmer independence, as well as flavour, energy, and integrity.

Why GMO Cacao Is Problematic

  1. Loss of Diversity
    Heirloom and native cacao varieties are being replaced by high-yielding hybrid or GMO strains - like the Peruvian CCN51 for example. This threatens centuries-old cacao lineages and the deep cultural and ecological knowledge woven into their cultivation.

  2. Flavour & Medicine Are Compromised
    Mass-produced cacao may look the same, but it often lacks the complexity, subtle properties, and potency of traditional, non-GMO varieties. For ceremonial use, that’s a deal-breaker.

  3. Corporate Control
    GMO crops often come with patented seeds, meaning farmers can’t save and replant them. This increases dependence on multinational agribusinesses and undermines traditional farming sovereignty.

  4. Contamination Is Real
    Even farmers who choose not to grow GMO cacao are at risk.  Wind, pollinators, and water can carry GMO pollen into non-GMO farms. Staying pure and untainted is becoming harder

  5. Monocultures & Deforestation 

    GMO cacao is often planted in large-scale monocultures, which are vast, chemically managed and farms are stripped of biodiversity. These plantations are commonly grown on deforested land, displacing complex ecosystems in favour of uniformity. This not only degrades the soil and pollinator habitats, but also breaks the deep connection between cacao and the forest it evolved with.

  6. Economic Pressure on Farmers

    Small-scale cacao farmers are increasingly pressured to switch to GMO or hybrid varieties by governments, agribusiness consultants, and corporate buyers promising higher yields, disease resistance, and better market access. For farmers struggling to make ends meet, these offers can be tempting, especially when non-GMO cultivation requires more care, and doesn’t always guarantee premium prices. But the true cost is long-term: dependency on seed companies, loss of traditional knowledge, and participation in a system that prioritises quantity over quality.

We source our cacao from heirloom cacao beans. These ancient, genetically diverse varieties carry the lineage, spirit, and depth of traditional cacao. These beans are grown by smallholder farmers in regions like Ecuador’s Chocó Andino, where cacao still grows in its ancestral home under the forest canopy, nourished by complex soil systems and traditional knowledge.

It means putting tradition, flavour, and most importantly ecology above profit. It also means a lot more work, tracing every batch, supporting farmers who resist GMO pressures, and paying above-market prices to ensure integrity at every level.
